Photography Journal - August 13, 2017
This is the first in my daily photography diary. I’ve tried to do 365 photography projects before, but they never really take because there is always an assignment to follow. Sometimes I forget to take the assigned picture and then I feel like I shouldn’t bother.
The idea here is to simply take photos and explain why I took them.
Today, I went kayaking and recorded a YouTube video (YouTube channel coming soon) today at the Armand Bayou Nature Preserve.
I love this place.
I hop in my little plastic boat and I get away from civilization and people entirely. It is my way of having a week-long vacation in a single morning.
I started out how I usually start out, by going the exact opposite direction of every other person who was also launching kayaks. It isn’t that I don’t like people, but I’m not getting up at 5am to hang out with a bunch of noisy people. I want seclusion. I want the feeling of wilderness, even if I am only 15 minutes from the 3rd largest city in the nation (that’s right, suck it Chicago).
I tried fishing for a little while and abandoned it because I wasn’t catching anything. I used to be a great fisherman when I was younger, but I seem to have lost the touch.
After that it was all photography. I saw herons, I saw cranes, I saw alligators, I saw snakes, I saw spiders, and I nearly put the whole operation in the drink because of an all-too-friendly wasp.
In short, I had a great time and took some images I’m genuinely proud of. It was a good day.
